


Our first general meeting is this Friday, May 18th, at 2 PM. It will be held in 121 Annenberg.
We are seeking Caltech students to join our cabinet for the 2012-13 year. If you want to start a company, we encourage you to join our group. The eClub aims to provide aspiring entrepreneurs with the knowledge and connections to help launch the companies of the future.
Cabinet positions will be open to current students and recent graduates.

The Caltech Entrepreneurship Club’s annual networking reception presents an opportunity for students and postdoctoral scholars to interact with a wide swath of important contacts in the local community. In continuing with this tradition, the club has invited representatives from the Pasadena Angels Investment Group, the Tech Coast Angels Investment Group, the USC Stevens Institute for Innovation, and Idealab. We look forward to strong attendance from Caltech, USC, and UCLA. And, we hope to provide a superb opportunity for networking and communication among entrepreneurs.

Keynote Speaker: Peggy Cherng, PhD
Dr. Cherng serves as Co-Chairman and Co-CEO of Panda Restaurant Group. Dr. Cherng co-founded Panda Express in 1983. She serves on several boards: She is a Director of Methodist Hospital of Southern California, a Director of Worldwide Restaurant Concepts, and a Director at National Restaurant Association. She also served as a Director of East West Bancorp Inc. from 2002 to May 24, 2011. Dr. Cherng is also on the Board of Visitors for the Peter F. Drucker School of Management at Claremont Graduate University.

We would like to invite you to a talk and Q&A session by the founder of Spokeo.com, Harrison Tang. Harrison started Spokeo along with a couple of hist Stanford roommates in 2006. They pioneered the concept of social network aggregator, and ultimately evolved into a people search engine in 2008. Today Spokeo hosts 10,000,000 unique visitors a month - making it a Top-300 website in the US. Harrison will give a talk about the different options for growing an internet startup, relating his experiences in growing Spokeo as well as incubating and investing in a number of other startups. The talk will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday 3/14 in Sherman Fairchild Library's (SFL) 3rd floor Multimedia Conference Room (MCR).

Caltech's Entrepreneurial Development Class (E102), taught by Ken Pickar of the Tech Coast Angels will be hosting its final presentations on March 9th from 1:30 pm to 4:00 pm in Broad 100.
The presentations (seven in total) will be 15 minutes long followed by 5 minutes of questions.
Each team will be presenting the business idea that they spent the last ten weeks exploring. Several of the ideas may even turn into real companies.

Speaker Biography:
Kohl S. Gill, PhD, is the President and Founder of LaborVoices, Inc., a start-up company providing information services to global workers and supply-chain managers. Dr. Gill served as an AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow for the U.S. Departments of Energy and State, most recently as the South Asia and Middle East Labor Affairs Officer for the Office of International Labor and Corporate Social Responsibility in the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor.

The Caltech Alternative PhD Careers Club (altcphd.caltech.edu) has put together a panel on technology transfer and entrepreneurship for those interested in pursuing such careers. Our panelists include:
• Hannah Dvorak-Carbone, PhD - Associate Director at Caltech's Office of Technology Transfer
• Ryan Kelly, PhD - Technology Licensing Manager at City of Hope's Office of Technology Licensing
• Karen Kerr, PhD - Senior Director of New Ventures and Alliances at the USC Stevens Institute for Innovation
Our club will provide a light lunch and refreshments. Please join us so we can work together to explore novel pathways and new verticals in which PhDs can contribute to the workforce after obtaining their hard-earned degrees.
The eClub will be holding a legal workshop with startup attorney Linda Wang, founder of Cambrian Factor, Inc. During the workshop, Linda will help current and future entrepreneurs with the basics of entity formation (LLC/Corp/Partnership), including what factors people use to choose an entity, the tax consequences of each and a brief discussion on the benefits/myths of incorporating in different states. She will cover how to incorporate the right way in Delaware, California and Nevada, and will bring handouts with sample provisions/documents and tips.
Gil Elbaz is coming to Caltech Tuesday, February 21st!
He is an amazing entrepreneur, founder of Applied Semantics, creator of Google's AdSense, Caltech Trustee, and CEO of Factual. He will be having a Q&A/talk with the eClub and Caltech Community on Tuesday, February 21st at 2:00pm in Beckman Behavioral Biology, Room 24.

The Caltech Entrepreneurship Club is happy to invite you to a Q&A session with Dr. Mark Long.
Dr. Mark Long earned his PhD from Caltech in 1999. Shortly after, he joined PayMyBills.com. Dr. Long led technology development from an early prototype to full-fledged product as head of engineering. The successful PayMyBills won several awards and was eventually acquired by PayTrust. Dr. Long has since served as the CTO at PortBlue Corporation and Zynx Health.
On February 3rd, 2012 the USC Marshall Business Entertainment Association will be hosting the 4th Annual E2: The Evolution of Entertainment conference.
This event is designed to allow professionals and students to hear from and interact with media and entertainment industry veterans. The Marshall School of Business is situated at the epicenter of the entertainment industry in Los Angeles and is globally recognized as a top international business school.
