Dave Berkus: Distinguished Entrepreneurial Speaker

Hello all,

I hope the school year has started off well! As a commencery act, the e-club will be hosting early-stage venture capitalist David W. Berkus. Mr. Berkus is the former chairman of the Tech Coast Angels, the nation's largest angel investor network, and is chairman or on the board of ten public and private companies. The recipient of numerous business awards and a life-long entrepreneur (check out his website here: http://www.berkus.com/berkus.html), Mr. Berkus now gives speeches on tech trends as a profession, but has graciously volunteered to speak at Caltech for free. I hope you can all attend this unique event that we have worked hard to put together, you won't be disappointed! Details below:

Iqbal Quadir Talk

The next Caltech Entrepreneurship Club event will take place at 12 p.m. on Thursday, April 16, in 106 Spalding. Iqbal Quadir is the founder and director of the Legatum Center for Development and Entrepreneurship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which promotes bottom-up entrepreneurship in developing countries. In the 1990s, Quadir founded GrameenPhone, which provides effective telephone access throughout Bangladesh.

Dear Students,

I'm writing to inform you of an opportunity open to all Caltech students both graduate and undergraduate. The MIT Clean Energy Prize is a student business plan competition sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and NSTAR in which student teams will compete for a total of $500,000 in cash and other prizes by entering their business plans for innovations in Clean Energy. There are five categories to enter and the winners of each category will receive significant awards and publicity opportunities. The categories are Biomass, Clean Hydrocarbons, Energy Efficiency & Infrastructure, Renewables, and Transportation.

Lemelson-Caltech Student Prize

The Lemelson-Caltech Student Prize will award $30,000 to the Caltech student who best demonstrates they are a burgeoning inventor and innovator. This a great opportunity for any student with entrepreneurial aspirations.

The award is open to all undergraduate and graduate students at Caltech. The deadline to apply is Dec 31, 2008.
